About

Zachary Keith Scotton, also known as Zachary Kei is an Ithaca based artist and clothing designer He uses botanical dyed canvas to create an array of objects featuring his unique patchwork style and dye practices. Scotton draws from traditional patchwork styles, but also steps away from tradition finding inspiration in the wavy organic forms found in nature, like overlapping clouds, flower petal configurations and water currents. Scotton pays homage to his background in denim repair and alteration through a heavy use of indigo and an overall dye application that resembles the patina of well worn denim.

Scotton was born in Los Angeles, Ca in 1991. Growing up skateboarding in Pasadena, Ca, Scotton learned to sew in middle school, motivated by the Los Angeles skate styles of the early 2000's that featureing skin tight jeans that were not readily available at that time. He would later go on to study fashion design at Marist College, and Los Angeles Trade Tech, before landing a job as a denim tailor at a budding new denim brand in 2017. Here, he would cut his teeth as a denim tailor, but also develope a love for indigo, repair and patchwork. Indigo was a gateway into natural, botanical based dyes which have been a focus in the last 3 years, where he has stepped away from tailoring and clothing design, and developed an art practice exploring natural dyes and patchwork design.
